Come into my office and chat
March 21, 2008 Uncategorized No CommentsOne of the great things about my job is the customer interaction. People know that they might be able to save a buck or two buying online. What they cannot get online is a friend to talk to. I am reminded of this on a daily basis.
My office sits at the back of the camera store. I have a door that opens into the store. I can shut it if the need arises, but most of the time it is wide open. Customers can come in and peek through the door. They can see me writing this blog, shuffling paper work etc. and often they will come in and talk.
I have a couple extra chairs in my office. Almost on a daily basis customers will come in and take a seat. The conversations always start about photography but often stray into religion, politics, family situations etc. This might annoy managers in some businesses, but I enjoy it. I am thankful that people often come in and talk to me about the fight they had with their boss or the straight A report card their kid just received.
By supporting your local camera store (and other local businesses) you get more than just merchandise to take home. You get friends to come in and talk to. We appreciate it when you spend some money in our store. But we don’t require it. Sometimes it is nice to just sit down and talk. But more times than not, those relationships do lead to purchases. By building these relationships we also get repeat business. These relationships also grow to include not just the initial customer, but also their friends, families, neighbors and co-workers. When you treat one customer like family they will tell others.
So if you come into my store and see me working in my office, don’t be afraid to interrupt. Come in and have a seat. Ask me about that new camera that you just heard about. We can also talk about your family or even politics. You can even bring me a sandwich if you want! My door is always open!

P.S. Try calling B&H and talk to them about your kids!
